Discectomy

Discectomy

Minimally invasive removal of damaged disc material pressing on a nerve root, performed under local anesthesia with same-day discharge.

Recovery: 1-2 weeks
Local Anesthesia
Same-Day Discharge

A discectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the damaged or herniated portion of a spinal disc that is pressing on a nerve root or the spinal cord. At Blue Spine, discectomy is performed using patented minimally invasive techniques that eliminate the need for general anesthesia and allow most patients to return home the same day.

What Is a Discectomy?

The spinal discs act as cushions between the vertebrae of the spine. When a disc becomes herniated or damaged, the inner material can protrude and press on nearby nerves, causing pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness that can radiate into the arms or legs. A discectomy removes this protruding material to relieve the pressure on the nerve.

The Blue Spine Approach

Unlike conventional discectomy procedures that require general anesthesia and large incisions, the Blue Spine discectomy is performed through a micro-incision under local anesthesia. The patient remains awake throughout the procedure and can communicate directly with the surgical team, providing real-time feedback that improves precision and safety.

The procedure uses specialized instruments developed and patented by Dr. James Harrington over 40 years of surgical innovation.

Are You a Candidate?

You may be a candidate for discectomy if you experience:

  • Persistent pain that radiates from the lower back into one or both legs
  • Numbness or tingling in the legs or feet
  • Weakness in the legs that affects daily activities
  • Symptoms that have not improved with conservative treatment after six weeks
  • A confirmed disc herniation on MRI or CT scan

What to Expect

Before the procedure: You will have a thorough consultation with your surgeon to review your imaging and medical history. Most patients do not require any special preparation beyond avoiding food and drink for a short period before the procedure.

During the procedure: The procedure is performed under local anesthesia. You will be awake and comfortable. A micro-incision is made and specialized instruments are used to remove the damaged disc material. The procedure typically takes one to two hours.

After the procedure: Most patients walk out of the facility the same day. Pain relief is often immediate. You will receive specific instructions for your recovery period.

Recovery

Recovery from the Blue Spine discectomy is significantly faster than traditional open surgery. Most patients return to light activities within one to two weeks and resume full activity within four to six weeks. Your surgeon will provide a personalized recovery plan based on your specific case.
